Pass the Mylanta...
I'm a New York "Football" Giants fan. I live
in New England, home of the Patriots, but there are plenty of old-timers who
love the G-Men from before the AFL was born. We don't get too many games on TV,
but I'm planted on the sofa for every one that is.
You can tell a Giants fan by a few simple traits:
- An inability to celebrate the Giants taking the lead in any
game. If there's time for a kickoff or punt, there's time for the Giants to
lose. It isn't pessimistic if it happens enough times...(see the NFC Wild Card
Game against the 49ers).
- An inability to remember any of the Giants wide receivers from
before 2000. The ones that played special teams are easier to remember, but
most fans can't remember the 1-2-3 receivers from any season (assuming the
Giants ever had three WRs at any given time). I watch some of their games on
ESPN Classic and it's a revelation.
- Strong feelings for all of the former coaches. If you want to
see a Giants fan flinch, say "Is that Ray Handley?" Tommy Maddox's resurrection
has taken all the fun out of ragging on Dan Reeves. Seeing Bill Parcells in a
Cowboys sweater is going to be painful for all of us, though.
The Giants have had great players over the years, but everyone has
favorites that just "played great." Guys like Phil McConkey or Jim Burt. What
makes the Giants a fun team is that they tend to win because somebody steps up
and plays unexpectedly well. What makes the Giants a painful team is that the
fourth quarter lasts an hour if the Giants are in the lead and ten minutes if
they're behind.
