Driveway Garden, AUG 2003I planted a garden in July, 2002 along the back of my driveway atop a stone retaining wall. I was trying for a drought-tolerant dragonfly garden and it seems to be working. The garden is a strip of yarrow, butterfly weed, and coneflowers surrounding a juniper shrub and wormwood. The yarrow varies from pale yellow to bright yellow to salmon/apricot. The juniper shrub finally died in the summer heat and I replaced it with a pair of coreopsis verticillata "Golden Shower" plants. The driveway garden has the following plants:

The coneflowers are growing like cabbages. The gaps are filling with yarrow and butterfly weed.
The butterfly weed is producing its last spotty blooms. The butterflies and dragonflies love this stuff. I like the nice color it gives my garden.
I replaced the dead juniper shrub with a pair of Coreopsis Verticillata "Golden Showers". It should grow into a nice mound among the cushion spurge.
The 'Neon' sedum is finally starting to bloom. The monarch butterflies seem to love it.
This transplanted hydrangea, courtesy of a friend of my mother in New York, is growing nicely in my back yard. It wilted in the heat, but recovered with a little rain.
For kicks, I decided to try an Earthbox to grow veggies. I chose pepper plants (a favorite of mine). After liberal doses of insecticidal soap, the ants and other bugs have begun to leave my plants alone. Animals don't often venture up to my deck but I think I've been a little lucky here, too. Anyway, here's my first pepper... |
