Driveway Garden, JUN 2003

I planted a garden in June, 2002 along the back of my driveway atop a stone retaining wall. I was trying for a drought-tolerant dragonfly garden and it seems to be working. The garden is a strip of yarrow, butterfly weed, and coneflowers surrounding a juniper shrub and wormwood. The yarrow varies from pale yellow to bright yellow to salmon/apricot.

The driveway garden has the following plants:

  • Yarrow (Achillea Apricot, Huffnung, JungFrau, Martina)Sprouting
  • Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Tuberosa) Sprouting
  • White Coneflower (Echinacea Purpurea White Swan) Sprouting
  • Stonecrop (Sedum Kamtschaticum 'Variegatum') Sprouting
  • Stonecrop (Sedum Spectabile 'Neon') Sprouting
  • Juniper shrub Sprouting
  • Cushion Spurge (Euphorbia Cyparissias) Sprouting
  • Wormwood (Artemesia Ponticum) Dead?

The following pictures show the garden during June, 2003.

First bloom of the yarrow. The yarrow are growing wider this year. I'm looking forward to their multicolored blooms and the dragonflies they attract.

Bug Porn
(19 JUN 03)

The yarrow seems to be the rendezvous spot for horny bugs. At least a half dozen were mating this morning. If there's a market for bug porn, I'll get an AdultCheck site set up...

The coneflowers are growing like cabbages. The gaps are filling with yarrow and butterfly weed.

In late May I added cushion spurge (Euphorbia Cyparissias) in place of the dead artemesia. The blossoms are changing over from yellow to rose.

Butterfly Weed
(12 JUN 03)

The butterfly weed is coming up very nicely this year.
